The Blitz Party in East London is coming up this Saturday, tickets have been sold out for weeks and I am BEYOND excited. I'm a bit of a WWII aficionado as it is, with vintage posters adorning my walls and trips to the Imperial War Museum pretty standard fare, but combine that with dressing up and getting my groove on and I'm basically foaming at the mouth.
Dissertation overload and a dented bank balance meant my plan to spend a day hunting out a whole new outfit essentially died a death but I figured 'making do' with what's already in my wardrobe seems pretty gung-ho in the wartime spirit! So I rooted around and this is what I'm thinking thus far (above). I decided to go pretty understated and bow tie and braces seemed to make sense.
Of course when it comes to a bit of period dressing you can't go wrong with a jolly good pair of brogues and even if I change my mind about everything else these doozies will be gracing my feet for sure. Aren't they great?!
I also picked up this amazing ration book tote while I was at a recent press event for a new food exhibit at the Imperial War Museum, which I'm writing a piece on for my magazine, and so far it spends most of its time hanging on the outside of my wardrobe door but for this it seems throughly apt.
OK, so it may not be the most understated thing in the world but we are talking good times in a sandbagged bunker in East London so a little flamboyance seemed allowed and what's more flamboyant than feathers? I love this brooch and it was a cheeky purchase from Beyond Retro when I was meant to NOT be shopping for myself but pulling clothes for a shoot when I was helping out at Notion Magazine forever ago. My bad.
Finally I decided something with serious timely relevance (no horrible timepiece pun intended...well maybe a little) would be good and so I dug out my Grandfather's old pocket watch which he had back in the late sixties. Working along the lines that seeing as my Grandfather used to be a morse code operator back during WWII there's some kind of 'degrees of separation' connection there. It's probably worth less than a cup of tea but it does look pretty snazz.
So I'll leave you with some Vera Lynn circa 1941, I'll upload pictures from the night after this weekend. I can't wait to see the other looks...

This outfit is perfect for this event! The bag is amazing but the shoes are definitely the best bit.
P.S. My captcha is 'event', haha! Appropriate.
brogues are awesome!
very awesome shoes.com!
interstng. i was just reading about the invention of the golilla...the stiff silk wrapped cardboard thing they wore around their necks in the 1600s...and it was invented for dress during wartime. fashion is so awesome in more ways than one.
